SQUEAKY BRAKES AFTER NEW PADS? HERE IS WHY

You just paid for new brakes and they squeak. Is that normal? Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Here is how to tell the difference.

The Break-In Period Is Real

New brake pads need a bedding-in period — typically 200 to 300 miles of normal driving. During this time, the pad material transfers a thin, even layer onto the rotor surface. This transfer layer is what gives you smooth, quiet, consistent braking. Until that layer is established, you may hear some noise — light squeaking, especially during the first few stops of the day when the brakes are cold. This is normal. The key distinction is whether the noise diminishes over the first week or two of driving. If it is getting quieter and less frequent, the pads are bedding in properly. If it is staying the same or getting worse after 300 miles, something else is going on.

What Is Not Normal After New Pads

Persistent loud squealing every time you brake after 300 miles of driving is not a bedding-in issue. Grinding noises on new pads are never normal — something is wrong with the installation. A constant scraping sound even when you are not braking means a pad or shim is contacting the rotor continuously. Pulsation in the brake pedal with new pads suggests the rotors were not resurfaced or replaced when they should have been. Any of these symptoms after a recent brake job mean the brakes need to be re-inspected. If you had brakes done elsewhere and they do not feel right, bring it to Nick's for a second opinion — we will tell you honestly what we find.

Common Causes of Squeaky New Brakes

Glazed rotors are the number one cause of squeaky new pads. If the rotors were not resurfaced or replaced during the pad change, the old transfer layer from the previous pads creates a glassy surface that the new pads cannot grip properly. The pads skate across the glazed surface and vibrate, creating the squeal. Missing or improperly installed anti-squeal shims — the thin metal or rubber-coated plates that sit behind the pad — let the pad vibrate against the caliper piston, creating noise. Dry or unlubricated slide pins cause the caliper to sit at a slight angle, so the pad contacts the rotor unevenly. And low-quality pads with poor material composition are simply noisier than quality pads.

How a Proper Brake Job Prevents Squeal

At Nick's Tire and Auto, every brake job includes the steps that prevent post-installation noise. We inspect and resurface or replace rotors as needed — no slapping new pads on old, glazed rotors. We clean and lubricate caliper slide pins so the caliper moves freely and the pads contact the rotor evenly. We install anti-squeal hardware and apply brake-specific lubricant to the back of the pads and all metal-to-metal contact points. And we use quality pads — not the cheapest option from the parts store. These steps take a few extra minutes but they are the difference between a quiet brake job and one that squeals from day one.
