5 SIGNS YOUR BRAKES NEED REPLACING

Your brakes are the most important safety system on your vehicle. Knowing when they need attention can prevent costly repairs and keep you safe on Cleveland roads.

1. Squealing or Squeaking When Braking

A high-pitched squeal when you press the brake pedal is usually the first warning sign. Most brake pads have a built-in wear indicator — a small metal tab that contacts the rotor when the pad material gets thin. This is designed to alert you before the pads wear down completely. If you hear this sound, you typically have some time before the brakes become unsafe, but you should schedule an inspection soon.

2. Grinding or Metal-on-Metal Sound

If squealing has progressed to a grinding noise, the brake pads are likely worn through completely. At this point, the metal backing plate of the pad is grinding directly against the brake rotor. This causes rotor damage and makes the repair more expensive. Grinding brakes need immediate attention — driving on them is unsafe and the damage gets worse with every stop.

3. Soft or Spongy Brake Pedal

When you press the brake pedal and it feels soft, sinks to the floor, or requires more pressure than usual, there may be air in the brake lines, a brake fluid leak, or a failing master cylinder. This is a serious safety concern because it directly affects your stopping ability. Our technicians check the entire hydraulic system to find the exact cause.

4. Vehicle Pulling to One Side When Braking

If your car pulls left or right when you brake, it usually means one side is working harder than the other. Common causes include a stuck caliper, uneven pad wear, or a collapsed brake hose. This creates uneven stopping force and can make the vehicle difficult to control during hard braking.

5. Vibration or Pulsation in the Brake Pedal

A pulsating brake pedal — where you feel a rhythmic vibration when braking — typically indicates warped brake rotors. Rotors can warp from excessive heat, usually caused by heavy braking or driving with worn pads. The uneven surface creates the pulsation you feel through the pedal. Resurfacing or replacing the rotors solves the problem.
