OHIO E-CHECK: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOUR TEST

Ohio E-Check is required for vehicle registration in Cuyahoga County and surrounding areas. Here is what causes failures and how to make sure your vehicle passes.

What Is Ohio E-Check?

Ohio E-Check is an emissions testing program required in certain Ohio counties, including Cuyahoga County where Cleveland is located. The test checks your vehicle's onboard diagnostic system (OBD-II) to make sure emissions controls are working properly. If your check engine light is on or emissions monitors are incomplete, your vehicle will fail.

Common Reasons for E-Check Failure

The most common causes of E-Check failure are: check engine light illuminated, incomplete readiness monitors, faulty oxygen sensors, catalytic converter problems, EVAP system leaks, and EGR valve malfunctions. Any active diagnostic trouble code related to emissions will cause a failure.

What Are Readiness Monitors?

Your vehicle's computer runs self-tests called readiness monitors on various emissions systems. These monitors must show as 'complete' for the E-Check to pass. After a battery disconnect, major repair, or cleared codes, the monitors reset and need to complete a drive cycle before testing. This is why you should not clear codes right before an E-Check — the monitors will show as incomplete and you will fail.

How to Prepare for E-Check

Before your E-Check appointment, make sure your check engine light is off and has been off for at least a week. Drive your vehicle normally for several days to allow all readiness monitors to complete. If your check engine light is on, get the problem diagnosed and repaired first. Bringing a vehicle with a known problem to E-Check wastes your time and money.

What If You Already Failed?

If your vehicle failed E-Check, bring the failure report to us. It tells us which systems failed and gives us a starting point for diagnosis. We will identify the root cause, make the repair, and verify that all monitors complete before sending you back for retesting. We handle E-Check failures every week — it is one of our most common services.
