What Grinding Does to Your Rotors
Every time you press the brake with worn-through pads, the metal backing plate carves grooves into the rotor surface. Rotors are precision-machined to be flat and smooth. Once they are gouged, they cannot be resurfaced — they need full replacement. A rotor that could have been saved with a timely pad change is now scrap metal. We see this at Nick's every single week. Other Causes of Grinding Brakes
Less commonly, grinding can come from a stuck caliper that does not release, causing continuous contact between pad and rotor. Road debris — a rock or piece of metal — can get caught between the pad and rotor. And on vehicles that sit for extended periods, heavy rotor rust can create a grinding sound for the first few stops until the rust wears off. That last one is harmless and common in Cleveland where overnight humidity causes surface rust.
Repair Costs: The Sooner the Cheaper
If you catch it early — pads are thin but not yet grinding: $150 to $250 per axle for pads only. If you are already grinding — pads are gone, rotors are damaged: $300 to $500 per axle for pads and rotors. If you kept driving and damaged the calipers too: $500 to $800 per axle for pads, rotors, and calipers. The progression is predictable and the lesson is always the same: the squeal was the cheap warning.
