ABS LIGHT ON? WHAT IT MEANS AND WHAT TO DO

The ABS light means your anti-lock braking system has a fault. Your regular brakes still work, but the safety net is gone. Here is what to know.

What the ABS Light Means

ABS stands for Anti-lock Braking System. It prevents your wheels from locking up during hard braking, which lets you steer while braking — critical on icy Cleveland roads. When the ABS light comes on, it means the system has detected a fault and turned itself off. Your regular brakes still work normally. You can stop the car. But in a panic stop on a wet or icy road, the wheels can lock up and you will skid instead of stopping in a controlled manner.

Most Common ABS Light Causes

Wheel speed sensor failure is the number one cause. Each wheel has a sensor that tells the ABS computer how fast it is spinning. When a sensor fails or its wiring gets damaged, the computer cannot do its job and turns on the light. Road salt in Cleveland corrodes these sensor connections constantly. Low brake fluid can also trigger the ABS light because the system shares the hydraulic circuit with regular brakes. A failing ABS module or pump is less common but more expensive. And sometimes the issue is as simple as a dirty sensor — road grime and brake dust build up on the sensor face and block the signal.

Is It Safe to Drive with the ABS Light On?

Your regular brakes work. The car will stop. But the ABS safety net is gone, which means if you slam the brakes on a wet road or ice, the wheels can lock and you lose steering control. In Cleveland weather — rain, snow, black ice on bridge decks, sudden stops on I-90 — that safety net matters. We recommend getting it diagnosed sooner rather than later, especially heading into fall and winter.

ABS Repair Costs in Cleveland

ABS repair costs depend entirely on the cause. A wheel speed sensor replacement runs $150 to $300 per sensor (parts and labor). Cleaning a dirty sensor is sometimes all that is needed — that is a quick fix. If the ABS module or pump has failed, replacement costs $500 to $1,200 depending on the vehicle. Wiring repairs for corroded connections run $100 to $250. At Nick's, we scan the ABS codes first to identify the exact problem. Diagnostic time is included with any repair so you are not paying just to find out what is wrong.
