BRAKE NOISE WHEN STOPPING: WHAT IT MEANS

Brake noises are your car trying to tell you something. The type of sound tells us exactly what is going on — and how urgent it is.

High-Pitched Squeal or Squeak

This is the most common brake noise we hear about at our Cleveland shop. A high-pitched squeal when you press the brake pedal usually means the built-in wear indicator is contacting the rotor. Brake pad manufacturers install a small metal tab on the pad that starts touching the rotor when the pad wears down to about 2 to 3 millimeters. It is literally designed to annoy you into getting new pads. At this point you have some time — maybe 1,000 to 2,000 miles — but schedule an inspection soon. Morning squealing that goes away after a few stops is different. That is usually surface rust on the rotors from overnight moisture. Cleveland's humidity makes this common. It is harmless.

Metal Grinding or Scraping

Grinding is the sound that means you waited too long. The brake pad material has worn completely through and now the metal backing plate is grinding directly against the rotor. Every stop is carving grooves into the rotor surface. This is an immediate safety issue — your stopping distance is significantly increased, and the repair cost goes up with every mile you drive. What would have been a $200 pad job is now a $400 to $600 pad and rotor job. If you hear grinding, do not put it off another week. Come in today.

Thumping or Pulsating

If you feel a rhythmic thump through the brake pedal or steering wheel when braking, your rotors are likely warped. Warped rotors have uneven surfaces — high spots and low spots — that create the pulsation as the pad contacts an uneven surface. This happens from excessive heat (heavy braking, riding the brakes downhill) or from driving on worn pads that transfer heat unevenly to the rotor. It is not dangerous in the short term but it gets worse over time. The fix is new rotors and pads.

Clunking When Braking

A clunk or knock when you first apply the brakes — especially when braking while turning — usually points to worn suspension components rather than brakes. Loose caliper bolts, worn caliper bracket bushings, or bad ball joints can create clunking that seems related to braking. Cleveland potholes destroy suspension components, and the symptoms often show up under braking because that is when the weight shifts forward. We inspect the entire front end during brake services to catch this.
