What the Differential Does
The differential is a gearbox that allows your wheels to rotate at different speeds when turning corners. Without it, the inside wheel would skip and the vehicle would handle terribly. The differential contains thick gear oil that lubricates and cools the ring and pinion gears. AWD vehicles have both a front and rear differential, plus a transfer case — all with their own fluid.
When to Change It
Most manufacturers recommend differential fluid changes every 30,000-60,000 miles. Severe service (towing, off-road, Cleveland winter driving with 4WD engaged frequently) calls for the shorter interval. Transfer case fluid typically follows the same schedule. Check your owner's manual for the exact interval and fluid specification — using the wrong fluid type in a limited-slip differential can cause chattering and damage.

What Happens If You Skip It
Differential fluid breaks down and loses its lubricating properties over time. Metal shavings from normal gear wear contaminate the fluid. Eventually, inadequate lubrication causes accelerated wear, whining noises, and eventually gear failure. A differential fluid change costs $75-$150. A differential rebuild or replacement costs $1,500-$3,000+. The math is clear.

We drain the old fluid, inspect the magnetic drain plug for excessive metal particles (an early warning of internal wear), and fill with the correct manufacturer-specified fluid. For vehicles with limited-slip differentials, we use the proper friction modifier additive. The service takes about 30 minutes per differential.
