COOLANT FLUSH COST: WHAT TO EXPECT (2026)

Coolant flush is not glamorous, but skipping it leads to overheating, head gasket failure, and engine death. Here is what it costs and when you need it.

Coolant Flush Cost in Cleveland

At Nick's Tire & Auto, a coolant flush runs $100 to $175 depending on the vehicle and coolant type. Dealerships charge $150 to $250 for the same service. The price includes draining the old coolant, flushing the system to remove sediment and deposits, and filling with the correct type and mix of new coolant. We also pressure-test the system to check for leaks while we are in there.

Why Coolant Goes Bad

Coolant contains anti-corrosion additives that protect the radiator, heater core, water pump, and engine passages from rust and scale. These additives deplete over time. Once they are gone, corrosion starts eating the system from the inside. Old coolant turns acidic and attacks aluminum components — which is what most modern radiators and engine blocks are made of. Cleveland's temperature swings make this worse because the constant expansion and contraction stress the system.

How Often to Flush Coolant

Most manufacturers recommend every 30,000 miles or 5 years, whichever comes first. Some newer vehicles with long-life coolant can go 100,000 miles or 10 years. Check your owner's manual for the specific interval. If your coolant looks rusty, muddy, or has visible particles floating in it, it needs flushing regardless of mileage. We test coolant condition and freeze-point protection during every inspection.

What Happens If You Skip It

Skipping coolant flushes leads to a predictable cascade of failures. First, the water pump seal corrodes and starts leaking — $400 to $800 repair. Then the radiator develops pinhole leaks from internal corrosion — $300 to $600 to replace. The heater core (buried deep inside the dashboard) clogs or leaks — $600 to $1,200 to replace. Worst case, the engine overheats because of restricted coolant flow, warps the head gasket, and you are looking at $1,500 to $3,000 or a totaled engine. A $150 coolant flush every 5 years prevents all of this.
