HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU REALLY CHANGE YOUR OIL?

The old 3,000-mile rule is outdated. Modern engines and oils last much longer between changes. But driving in Cleveland conditions can shorten the interval.

The 3,000-Mile Myth

The 3,000-mile oil change interval dates back to the 1970s when engines used conventional oil with shorter additive packages. Modern engines with modern oils can go significantly longer. Following the 3,000-mile rule wastes money and oil. Your owner's manual has the correct interval for your specific engine — that is the number to follow, not a sticker on your windshield.

Modern Oil Change Intervals

Conventional oil: 5,000-7,500 miles. Synthetic blend: 5,000-7,500 miles. Full synthetic: 7,500-10,000 miles. Some vehicles with oil life monitors: up to 15,000 miles. These intervals assume normal driving conditions. Your owner's manual defines what counts as severe service for your vehicle.

Cleveland Driving = Severe Service

Most Cleveland driving actually qualifies as severe service conditions: frequent short trips (less than 10 miles), stop-and-go traffic, extreme temperatures (both summer heat and winter cold), dusty conditions, towing or heavy loads. If most of your driving fits these descriptions, use the shorter interval in your owner's manual. For example, if the manual says 7,500 miles normal or 5,000 miles severe, Cleveland drivers should use 5,000.

Oil Type Matters

Full synthetic oil costs more per change but lasts longer and provides better protection — especially in extreme temperatures. For Cleveland's climate swings, synthetic is worth the extra cost. Most modern vehicles require synthetic. If your manual specifies conventional oil, upgrading to synthetic still provides benefits but is not required.
