DASHBOARD WARNING LIGHTS EXPLAINED: WHAT EACH LIGHT MEANS

A light just came on in your dashboard and you do not know what it means or how serious it is. Here is every common warning light, what it means, and what to do.

Red Lights — Stop Driving

Red warning lights mean stop driving as soon as safely possible. Oil pressure light (oil can symbol) means oil pressure is dangerously low — continuing to drive can destroy the engine in minutes. Pull over, shut off the engine, and check the oil level. If the oil level is fine, do not restart — call a tow. Temperature warning light (thermometer symbol) means the engine is overheating. Pull over, shut off the engine, and let it cool. Do not open the radiator cap while hot. Brake warning light (exclamation mark in a circle) can mean the parking brake is on, brake fluid is low, or there is a serious brake system fault. Check the parking brake first. If it is released and the light stays on, get the brakes checked immediately — driving with a brake system fault is dangerous.

Yellow/Amber Lights — Schedule Service Soon

Yellow lights are warnings that something needs attention but is not an immediate emergency. Check engine light (engine outline) is the most common — it means the emissions or engine management system has detected a fault. A steady check engine light means schedule service soon. A blinking check engine light means misfire — reduce speed and get to a shop quickly to avoid catalytic converter damage. ABS light means the anti-lock brake system has a fault — normal brakes still work, but ABS will not activate in an emergency. Traction control light (car with squiggly lines) may indicate a system fault or that the system is actively engaging on slippery roads. TPMS light (tire with exclamation mark) means one or more tires are significantly low on pressure — check and inflate immediately.

Battery Light and Power Steering Light

The battery light (battery symbol) means the charging system is not maintaining proper voltage. This is usually an alternator problem. You may have limited driving time before the battery dies — minimize electrical load and drive to a shop or home. Do not shut the car off if you can avoid it, because it may not restart. The power steering light means power assist has failed — the car will still steer but with much more effort. On hydraulic systems, check for fluid leaks. On electric systems, the motor or control module may have failed. Both of these need prompt service.

What Each Repair Typically Costs

Check engine light diagnosis: $80 to $150 for the scan and diagnosis, plus the cost of whatever repair is needed — could be a $20 gas cap or a $1,500 catalytic converter. Oil pressure repair: $100 for a sensor to $2,000+ for an oil pump. Overheating repair: $100 for a thermostat to $1,500 for a head gasket. Brake warning: $100 for fluid top-off to $600 for a caliper or master cylinder. ABS repair: $150 for a sensor to $800 for a module. Battery/alternator: $150 for a battery to $700 for an alternator. The diagnosis tells you which end of the range you are at.

Do Not Ignore Dashboard Lights

Every warning light is there for a reason. Ignoring a yellow light today often creates a red light tomorrow at triple the cost. Come to Nick's Tire and Auto for fast, accurate diagnosis. We read codes, test components, and tell you exactly what is happening and what it costs to fix. Call (216) 862-0005 or drive to 17625 Euclid Ave, Euclid.
