CATALYTIC CONVERTER THEFT: HOW TO PROTECT YOUR CAR

Catalytic converter theft has exploded nationwide, and Cleveland is a hotspot. Here is what you need to know to protect your vehicle and what to do if it happens.

Why Thieves Target Catalytic Converters

Catalytic converters contain precious metals — platinum, palladium, and rhodium — worth up to $500 per converter at scrap. A thief with a battery-powered saw can remove one in under 2 minutes. The metals are nearly impossible to trace once recycled. Ohio passed a law requiring scrap dealers to record seller information, but enforcement is difficult.

Most Targeted Vehicles in Cleveland

Toyota Prius (hybrid converters contain more precious metals). Honda CR-V, Accord, and Element. Toyota Tacoma and Tundra (high ground clearance = easy access). Ford F-series trucks (high ground clearance). Jeep Grand Cherokee. Any vehicle with high ground clearance is easier to target because the thief does not need a jack. Fleet vehicles parked in lots overnight are frequent targets.

Prevention Measures

Install a catalytic converter shield or cage ($200-$500 installed — the most effective deterrent). Park in well-lit areas or inside a garage. Install a motion-activated security camera or light where you park. Engrave your VIN on the converter (makes it harder to sell). Use high-temperature automotive paint to mark the converter with a bright color. Consider a tilt-sensor alarm that triggers when someone jacks up the vehicle. Park close to curbs or walls to reduce clearance access.

What Happens If Yours Is Stolen

You will know immediately — the vehicle will be extremely loud when started (sounds like a race car). File a police report immediately. Contact your insurance company — comprehensive coverage typically covers theft. Replacement cost: $1,000-$3,000 depending on the vehicle (some hybrids are higher). Aftermarket converters are less expensive than OEM but may not meet Ohio's emission standards for eCheck. At Nick's Tire & Auto, we can install a replacement converter and a protective shield at the same time.
