What Brake Calipers Do
The brake caliper is the hydraulic clamp that squeezes the brake pads against the rotor when you press the brake pedal. Each caliper contains one or more pistons that push outward when brake fluid pressure is applied. When you release the pedal, the piston retracts slightly and the pads release from the rotor. This happens thousands of times per drive. The caliper has to move freely on its slide pins and the piston has to retract smoothly. When any of that goes wrong, you get braking problems that range from annoying to dangerous.
Sticking Caliper Symptoms
A sticking caliper is the most common caliper problem we see at Nick's. The caliper does not fully release when you take your foot off the brake, so the pad stays in partial contact with the rotor. Symptoms include the vehicle pulling to one side during braking — toward the stuck caliper because it is applying more force. You might notice a burning smell after driving, especially after highway driving on I-90. The affected wheel may be noticeably hotter than the others — you can feel the heat radiating from it. Fuel economy drops because you are essentially driving with the brakes partially on. And the brake pad on the stuck side will wear much faster than the others.

What Causes Caliper Problems in Cleveland
Cleveland salt and moisture are the primary villains. Brake caliper slide pins operate in boots — rubber covers that keep dirt and water out. When those boots crack or tear from age and Cleveland winter chemicals, moisture gets in and the pins corrode. Corroded pins cannot slide freely, so the caliper sticks. Caliper pistons have rubber seals that also degrade over time. When the seal dries out or cracks, the piston does not retract properly. Road salt accelerates all of this. On vehicles older than 8 to 10 years that have spent their life on Cleveland roads, caliper problems are almost expected. Lakeshore Boulevard, I-90, any East Side road that gets heavy salt treatment — those vehicles see caliper issues earlier.
Seized vs Leaking Calipers
A seized caliper is a sticking caliper that has gotten worse — the piston is completely frozen and does not move at all. The brake on that corner either stays fully on or does not work at all. Either situation is dangerous. Driving with a seized caliper in the on position will destroy the pads and rotor quickly and can overheat the brake fluid, which causes complete brake failure. A leaking caliper means brake fluid is escaping past the piston seal. You might see fluid on the inside of the wheel or a wet spot on the caliper. A brake fluid leak means reduced hydraulic pressure, which means longer stopping distances. Both conditions require immediate attention.
Caliper Repair and Replacement Costs
At Nick's Tire and Auto, caliper service depends on what is wrong. If the slide pins are corroded but the caliper itself is fine, cleaning, lubricating, and re-booting the pins is part of a standard brake job — no extra charge on our $89 brake service. If the caliper piston is sticking and needs to be rebuilt, or if the caliper is seized or leaking, replacement is the repair. Caliper replacement typically runs $150 to $350 per caliper depending on the vehicle, including parts and labor. We always replace calipers in pairs — both fronts or both rears — to maintain even braking.
