WHEN TO REPLACE SHOCKS AND STRUTS — SIGNS & COSTS

Shocks and struts wear gradually, so you may not notice the decline. But they directly affect stopping distance, handling, and tire life.

Shocks vs Struts — What Is the Difference?

Shocks (shock absorbers) are standalone components that dampen spring oscillation. Struts are structural components that combine a shock absorber with a coil spring and strut mount — they are part of the vehicle's structure. Most modern vehicles have struts in the front and either struts or shocks in the rear. The distinction matters because strut replacement is more involved and more expensive.

Signs They Need Replacing

Vehicle bounces excessively over bumps or dips. Nose dives forward when braking hard. Body rolls excessively in turns. Rear end squats when accelerating. Cupped or scalloped tire wear pattern. Oil leaking from the shock body. Vehicle feels loose or floaty on the highway. Unusual noises over bumps. The bounce test: press down hard on each corner and release — if it bounces more than once, the damping is worn.

Why It Matters for Safety

Worn shocks and struts increase stopping distances by up to 20 percent because the tires bounce instead of maintaining contact with the road. They also reduce steering response and increase body roll, making emergency maneuvers less effective. On Cleveland's pothole-filled roads, good damping also prevents secondary impacts from bottoming out.

Replacement Cost and Timing

Most shocks and struts should be inspected at 50,000 miles and typically need replacement between 60,000-100,000 miles. Cleveland's rough roads tend toward the lower end of that range. Shock replacement: $200-$400 per pair (rear). Strut assembly replacement: $400-$800 per pair (front). We always replace in pairs (both fronts or both rears) for even handling. At Nick's, we also recommend a wheel alignment after strut replacement since it changes the alignment angles.
