WHY IS MY STEERING WHEEL SHAKING? COMMON CAUSES EXPLAINED

A shaking steering wheel is more than annoying — it often signals a problem that gets worse over time. Here are the most common causes and when to worry.

Unbalanced Tires (Most Common at Highway Speed)

If the shaking starts or gets worse at 55-70 mph, the most likely cause is unbalanced tires. When a tire is out of balance, it wobbles at speed, and that vibration transfers through the steering components to the wheel. Tire balancing costs $15-$25 per tire and takes about 30 minutes for all four. This should be done every time tires are mounted or rotated.

Warped Brake Rotors (Shaking When Braking)

If the steering wheel only shakes when you press the brake pedal, the front brake rotors are likely warped. Rotors warp from heat — either from heavy braking or from driving with worn pads. The uneven rotor surface creates a pulsation that you feel through the steering wheel. Resurfacing or replacing the rotors fixes this.

Worn Tie Rods or Ball Joints

Tie rods connect the steering rack to the wheel hubs. Ball joints connect the control arms to the steering knuckles. When these wear out, they develop play that causes vibration, wandering steering, and uneven tire wear. Worn steering components are a safety issue — if a ball joint fails completely, you lose steering control.

Bent Wheel or Tire Damage

Cleveland potholes are notorious for bending wheels. A bent wheel causes vibration that no amount of balancing can fix. Run your hand around the tire sidewall and check for bulges or flat spots — these indicate internal tire damage that also causes vibration. Bent wheels can sometimes be straightened, but severely bent wheels need replacement.

When to Get It Checked

Any new vibration should be inspected sooner rather than later. What starts as a minor imbalance can become uneven tire wear ($400+ in premature tire replacement) or a worn ball joint ($200-$400 per side). At Nick's Tire & Auto, we inspect the tires, balance, brakes, and suspension components to find the exact cause. Walk-ins welcome.
