WHAT DOES A CAR TUNE-UP INCLUDE? (AND WHEN YOU NEED ONE)

The term tune-up has changed a lot over the years, but the concept remains the same: replacing wear items and checking systems to keep your engine running efficiently. Here is what a modern tune-up actually includes.

The Modern Tune-Up: What Has Changed

Thirty years ago, a tune-up meant adjusting the carburetor, setting the ignition timing with a timing light, replacing the points and condenser, and adjusting the idle speed. Modern cars do not have any of those components — fuel injection, electronic ignition, and computer-controlled timing have replaced them all. Today, a tune-up is essentially a scheduled replacement of wear items that affect engine performance and efficiency. The engine computer handles all the adjustments automatically, but it can only work with what it is given. Worn spark plugs, clogged filters, and degraded fluids force the computer to compensate, which reduces performance and fuel economy. A tune-up restores everything to factory-fresh condition so the engine computer can do its job properly.

Spark Plug Replacement

Spark plugs ignite the air-fuel mixture in each cylinder. Over time, the electrode wears down and the gap widens, making the spark weaker. Worn spark plugs cause misfires, rough idle, hesitation during acceleration, reduced fuel economy, and increased emissions. Most modern vehicles use long-life platinum or iridium spark plugs that last 60,000 to 100,000 miles. Older vehicles with copper plugs need replacement every 30,000 miles. Four-cylinder engines have four spark plugs ($3 to $15 each for standard, $10 to $25 each for iridium), while V6 and V8 engines have six or eight. Labor varies because some engines have easily accessible plugs while others require removing intake manifolds or other components to reach them. The spark plugs alone can make a dramatic difference in how the engine runs.

Air Filter Replacement

The engine air filter prevents dirt, dust, and debris from entering the engine. A clogged air filter restricts airflow, which reduces power and fuel economy. In Cleveland, air filters get dirty faster in summer due to pollen and road dust, and in winter from road salt particles. Most manufacturers recommend replacing the engine air filter every 15,000 to 30,000 miles, but visual inspection is the best way to determine if yours needs replacement. A clean air filter is white or off-white; a dirty one is visibly gray or brown. The cabin air filter (which filters air coming through your heating and air conditioning vents) should be replaced at the same time. Many people do not realize their vehicle has a cabin air filter — if yours has not been changed in a while, you will notice a significant improvement in airflow and air quality inside the vehicle.

Fuel Filter Replacement

The fuel filter removes contaminants from the fuel before it reaches the engine. A clogged fuel filter restricts fuel flow, causing the engine to stumble, hesitate, or lose power — especially under hard acceleration or at highway speeds. Some modern vehicles have the fuel filter inside the fuel tank as part of the fuel pump assembly, making it a less common standalone replacement. Vehicles with external fuel filters should have them replaced every 30,000 to 60,000 miles. If your vehicle has been running rough, losing power at high RPM, or is hard to start, a clogged fuel filter may be the cause. This is an inexpensive part that can make a big difference in driveability.

PCV Valve, Ignition Wires, and Other Components

The PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve is a small but important component that recirculates gases from the crankcase back into the intake manifold. A stuck or failed PCV valve can cause oil leaks, increased oil consumption, rough idle, and a check engine light. Replacement is typically inexpensive and takes just a few minutes. Ignition wires (spark plug wires) carry the electrical charge from the ignition coil to the spark plugs. On vehicles that still use traditional ignition wires (many modern vehicles use individual coil-on-plug ignition), worn wires can cause misfires, rough running, and poor fuel economy. They should be replaced with the spark plugs. A tune-up also includes inspecting the distributor cap and rotor (on older vehicles), checking the serpentine belt for cracks and wear, and inspecting vacuum hoses for leaks.

Fluid Checks and Top-Offs

A thorough tune-up includes checking and topping off all vital fluids. Engine oil level and condition (color, consistency), coolant level and freeze point protection, transmission fluid level and color, brake fluid level and moisture content, power steering fluid level, and windshield washer fluid are all checked. While a tune-up does not typically include a full fluid flush, we will recommend one if any fluid shows signs of degradation. For example, brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point and reduces braking performance — if we measure high moisture content during a tune-up, we will recommend a brake fluid flush. Fresh fluids keep all systems operating at peak performance and help prevent costly repairs down the road.

How Much Does a Tune-Up Cost?

At Nick's Tire & Auto, tune-up costs range from $150 to $400 depending on your vehicle and what it needs. A basic tune-up for a four-cylinder vehicle (spark plugs, air filter, and visual inspection) starts around $150 to $200. A comprehensive tune-up for a V6 or V8 (spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter, PCV valve, ignition wires, and full fluid check) runs $250 to $400. Some vehicles cost more due to difficult spark plug access — for example, some V6 engines mounted sideways require removing the intake manifold to reach the rear spark plugs, which adds labor time. We always quote the price before we start the work, and we will never add services without your approval. Compared to dealership pricing ($300 to $600 for the same work), you save significantly at our independent shop without sacrificing quality.

When Do You Need a Tune-Up?

Follow your vehicle manufacturer's maintenance schedule for the most accurate intervals. As a general guideline, most vehicles need a tune-up every 30,000 miles for vehicles with copper spark plugs, or every 60,000 to 100,000 miles for vehicles with platinum or iridium plugs. Between scheduled tune-ups, watch for these signs that your engine needs attention sooner: decreased fuel economy (tracking your miles per gallon helps catch this early), rough idle or engine vibration at stop lights, hesitation or stumbling during acceleration, difficulty starting the engine (especially in cold weather), the check engine light coming on, or a noticeable drop in power. If you are not sure when your vehicle last had a tune-up, bring it to Nick's Tire & Auto. We will inspect everything and tell you what needs attention now, what can wait, and what is still in good shape. No unnecessary work, no upselling — just honest maintenance to keep your vehicle running right.
