The Catalytic Converter Theft Epidemic
Cleveland has been hit hard by catalytic converter theft. Thieves can slide under a vehicle and saw off a converter in 60 to 90 seconds. They sell the stolen converters for the precious metals inside — platinum, palladium, and rhodium — which can be worth $100 to $500 in scrap. Your replacement cost is $800 to $2,500 or more. It is happening everywhere — East Side, West Side, parking lots on Euclid Avenue, driveways in Parma, apartment complexes in Lakewood. SUVs and trucks with higher ground clearance are the easiest targets because thieves can get under them without a jack. Honda Elements, Toyota Priuses, and full-size trucks are hit the most because their converters contain higher concentrations of precious metals.
Replacement Cost Breakdown
The cost of a catalytic converter replacement depends on several factors. The converter itself is the biggest cost — OEM converters from the dealer run $800 to $2,000 just for the part. Aftermarket converters are less expensive at $200 to $800 but quality varies significantly. California-spec vehicles — CARB compliant — require more expensive converters. Labor for a straightforward bolt-on replacement is 1 to 2 hours. If the thieves cut the pipe instead of unbolting the converter — which they almost always do — the exhaust system needs welding or pipe replacement to connect the new converter, adding $100 to $300. If they damaged the oxygen sensor wiring during the theft, add sensor replacement at $100 to $250. At Nick's, we give you an honest quote based on your specific vehicle and situation.

OEM vs Aftermarket Converters
Here is the truth about aftermarket catalytic converters: the cheap ones often fail within 2 to 3 years and may not pass E-Check. The converter has to reach a certain temperature threshold to function properly and cheaper units with less catalyst material may not get there, especially in cold Cleveland weather. We have seen customers save $500 on a cheap converter only to fail their E-Check emissions test a year later and need another replacement. We recommend quality aftermarket converters from reputable brands like Walker, Eastern Catalytic, or MagnaFlow. They cost more than the bargain options but they actually work and last. For some vehicles, especially newer ones still under warranty, the OEM converter is worth the premium.
Theft Prevention Options
After replacing a stolen converter, the last thing you want is it stolen again. Catalytic converter shields and cages bolt around the converter and make it much harder to saw off. They add $200 to $400 installed but are worth it for high-target vehicles. Some shops weld rebar or steel straps around the converter — less elegant but effective. Etching or painting your converter with high-temperature paint and your VIN number does not prevent theft but makes the stolen unit harder to sell and easier to trace. Parking in well-lit areas, in a garage when possible, and installing motion-activated lights all help. For high-risk vehicles like Priuses and Honda Elements, a cage or shield is the best investment.
E-Check and Emissions Consequences
In Cuyahoga County, you need to pass the Ohio E-Check emissions test to register your vehicle. A missing or failed catalytic converter will fail E-Check every time. A check engine light with catalyst efficiency codes — P0420, P0430 — also fails E-Check. If your converter was stolen and you installed a cheap replacement that does not work properly, you will fail the emissions test. We handle E-Check failures regularly at Nick's Tire and Auto — diagnostics start at $49. We will scan the codes, verify the converter function, check oxygen sensor readings, and tell you exactly what needs to happen to pass. Call (216) 862-0005 or stop by 17625 Euclid Ave, Euclid.
