1. Transmission Slipping Between Gears
If your vehicle briefly loses power during a gear change — like the engine revs up but the car does not accelerate — the transmission is slipping. This can feel like driving over ice for a split second. Slipping is caused by worn clutch packs, low fluid, or a failing torque converter. Early slipping can often be addressed with a fluid change. Ignored slipping leads to a full rebuild.
2. Hard, Delayed, or Rough Shifts
Healthy transmissions shift smoothly and almost invisibly. If you feel a hard jolt, a noticeable delay, or a rough 'clunk' when shifting, something is wrong. Common causes include dirty transmission fluid, a failing shift solenoid, or worn internal components. A fluid and filter change fixes many shift quality issues when caught early.

3. Burning Smell
A burning smell coming from under your vehicle — especially after driving — often indicates overheated transmission fluid. Transmission fluid should be bright red. If it is dark brown or black and smells burnt, the fluid has broken down and is no longer protecting the internal components. A fluid change at this point may help, but the damage may already be done depending on how long it has been this way.
4. Transmission Fluid Leak
Transmission fluid is bright red when new and dark red to brown when old. If you see red or brown fluid under your vehicle (usually toward the center or front), you have a transmission fluid leak. Common sources include the pan gasket, cooler lines, and axle seals. Low fluid causes slipping, overheating, and eventually total failure. Fixing a leak is always cheaper than replacing a transmission.
5. Check Engine Light with Transmission Codes
Modern transmissions are computer-controlled. The check engine light illuminates when the transmission control module detects abnormal behavior. Common transmission codes include P0700 (general transmission fault), P0730 (incorrect gear ratio), and P0750-P0770 (shift solenoid issues). These codes tell a trained technician exactly where to look.
6. Grinding or Shaking During Gear Changes
In an automatic transmission, grinding or shaking during shifts indicates worn clutch plates or a failing torque converter. In a manual transmission, grinding when shifting usually means the synchronizers are worn. Either way, the internal components are not engaging smoothly and the problem will get progressively worse.
7. Vehicle Won't Move or Engage in Gear
If you shift into Drive or Reverse and nothing happens — or the engine revs but the vehicle barely moves — the transmission has a serious internal failure. This could be a broken input shaft, stripped gears, or total clutch pack failure. At this point, the transmission needs to be removed and rebuilt or replaced.
What to Do If You Notice These Signs
The single best thing you can do is get a diagnosis early. At Nick's Tire & Auto, we scan for transmission codes, check fluid condition and level, road test for shift quality, and give you an honest assessment. Many transmission problems caught early can be fixed with a fluid service or solenoid replacement for a few hundred dollars. The same problems ignored for months turn into $2,000-$3,500 rebuilds. Transmission diagnostics at Nick's are included with any repair — bring your vehicle in at the first sign of trouble.
