CLUNKING, CREAKING, OR POPPING? SUSPENSION NOISE DECODED

Your suspension absorbs Cleveland's rough roads silently when it is healthy. When components wear out, they start talking. Here is what the noises mean.

Clunking Over Bumps

A solid clunk when hitting bumps or dips usually means a worn sway bar link, ball joint, or strut mount. Sway bar links are the most common and least expensive ($100-$200 per side). Ball joints are more serious — a failed ball joint can cause loss of steering. We check for play in all these joints during a free suspension inspection.

Creaking When Turning

A creaking or groaning sound during low-speed turns often points to dry or worn ball joints, strut mounts, or sway bar bushings. In cold weather, rubber bushings can creak temporarily until they warm up — this is normal. If the creaking persists after driving for 10 minutes, the bushings likely need replacement.

Popping or Clicking

A popping sound during turns, especially tight turns, is a classic symptom of worn CV (constant velocity) joints. CV joints connect the transmission to the wheels on front-wheel-drive vehicles. The protective CV boot cracks, grease leaks out, dirt gets in, and the joint wears. Catching a torn boot early ($150-$250 boot replacement) saves the entire CV axle ($300-$500).

Squeaking Over Every Bump

Squeaking with every bump often means worn shock absorbers or struts. When the internal seals wear, the shock loses its damping ability and starts bouncing. Press down firmly on each corner of the car and release — if the vehicle bounces more than once, the shocks are worn. Worn shocks increase stopping distances and cause uneven tire wear.

What Cleveland Roads Do to Suspension

Potholes, frost heaves, and deteriorating road surfaces put Cleveland suspensions under constant stress. Components that might last 100,000 miles in a southern state may need replacement at 60,000-70,000 here. Annual suspension inspections catch wear before it becomes dangerous. At Nick's Tire & Auto, suspension inspections are always free — just stop by and we will put it on the lift.
