AC System Check
If your AC blew cold last summer but feels weak now, the system may have a slow refrigerant leak. AC performance degrades gradually, so you might not notice until it is 90 degrees and the air is barely cool. A basic AC recharge runs $150 to $250. If there is a leak in a hose or the condenser, repair costs range from $300 to $800. The compressor is the most expensive component — $600 to $1,200 if it fails. Getting the AC checked before the heat hits means you are not waiting in a shop when everyone else is desperate for cold air.
Coolant System and Overheating Prevention
Overheating is the number one cause of summer breakdowns. Your cooling system works harder when ambient temperatures climb. Check coolant level and condition — it should be the proper color with no rust or debris. If the coolant has not been flushed in 3 to 5 years, do it now. Also inspect hoses for soft spots, swelling, or cracks — rubber deteriorates in heat. A blown hose on the freeway turns a $20 part into a tow bill and possible engine damage. Cleveland traffic on I-90 and I-480 creates stop-and-go conditions that stress cooling systems the most.

Tire Pressure in the Heat
Tire pressure increases as temperature rises — roughly 1 PSI for every 10-degree increase in air temperature. Tires that were properly inflated in March can be overinflated by June. Overinflated tires wear unevenly in the center, reduce grip, and are more susceptible to blowouts on hot pavement. Check tire pressure monthly during summer using the cold pressure specified on the driver door sticker, not the tire sidewall number. Also check for any damage from spring pothole season that might cause a blowout at highway speed.
Battery and Electrical Check
Heat kills car batteries faster than cold does. A battery that struggled through winter is likely to fail in summer heat. High temperatures accelerate the chemical reaction inside the battery, causing fluid evaporation and internal plate damage. If your battery is over 3 years old, get it tested before summer. A $150 battery replacement is a lot better than being stranded at the lake or missing a family trip.
