Serpentine Belt Replacement Cost
At Nick's Tire & Auto, serpentine belt replacement runs $100 to $200 for most vehicles. The belt itself costs $25 to $75, and labor runs $75 to $150 depending on accessibility. Some vehicles — like certain V6 engines with the belt routed behind engine mounts — require more labor time and can run up to $250. Dealerships charge $200 to $400 for the same job. This is one of the most straightforward and affordable maintenance items on your vehicle.
What the Serpentine Belt Does
The serpentine belt is a single long rubber belt that winds around multiple pulleys on the front of the engine. It drives the alternator (which charges your battery), the power steering pump, the air conditioning compressor, and on many vehicles, the water pump. If this one belt fails, you lose all of those systems simultaneously. No charging, no power steering, no AC, and if your water pump is belt-driven, the engine overheats within minutes.

Warning Signs of a Failing Belt
Squealing from the engine bay — especially on cold Cleveland mornings or when you turn the steering wheel — is the classic sign. The belt is slipping on the pulleys. Visible cracks, fraying, or glazing (shiny smooth surface) on the belt means it is old and losing grip. If you see chunks missing or the belt looks like it is coming apart, it could snap at any time. A failing tensioner pulley (the spring-loaded pulley that keeps the belt tight) can also cause squealing and will eventually let the belt slip off.
When to Replace the Serpentine Belt
Most serpentine belts last 60,000 to 100,000 miles. Cleveland's temperature extremes — hot summers and freezing winters — stress rubber and can shorten belt life. We inspect the belt during every oil change and service. If we see cracking or wear, we will let you know. Replacing a belt on your schedule costs $150. Getting towed because it snapped on I-480 during rush hour costs $150 for the tow plus $150 for the belt plus lost time plus stress. The preventive approach always wins.
Belt and Tensioner at Nick's
When we replace the belt, we also inspect the tensioner and idler pulleys. A worn tensioner cannot keep proper belt tension, which causes premature belt wear and squealing. If the tensioner is weak or the pulleys are noisy, we recommend replacing them with the belt — an additional $50 to $100 in parts. This gives you a complete refresh that lasts another 60,000 to 100,000 miles. Call (216) 862-0005 or stop by.
