SERPENTINE BELT: WHEN TO REPLACE + WARNING SIGNS

One belt drives your alternator, AC compressor, power steering pump, and water pump. When it breaks, everything stops. Here is what to know.

What the Serpentine Belt Drives

The serpentine belt is a single long belt that snakes around multiple pulleys, driving the alternator (electrical power), water pump (engine cooling), AC compressor (air conditioning), power steering pump (steering assist), and sometimes the air pump. If this belt breaks, you lose all of these systems simultaneously. The engine will overheat within minutes without the water pump running.

Warning Signs

Squealing noise from the front of the engine, especially on startup or when turning the steering wheel. Visible cracks, fraying, or glazing on the belt surface. AC stops working. Power steering becomes stiff. Battery light comes on. Chirping noise that changes with engine RPM. Modern belts are made of EPDM rubber that wears differently from older neoprene belts — instead of cracking, they slowly lose material from the rib side, like a tire wearing down. This wear is hard to see without a belt wear gauge.

Replacement Interval

Most manufacturers recommend inspecting the serpentine belt at 60,000 miles and replacing it between 60,000-100,000 miles. Heat, cold cycling, and age deteriorate the rubber. Cleveland's temperature extremes (summer heat under the hood, winter cold on startup) stress the belt more than mild climates. If you are over 60,000 miles and cannot remember when the belt was last replaced, have it inspected.

Replacement Cost

The serpentine belt itself costs $25-$75. Labor is typically $75-$150. Total: $100-$225 at Nick's Tire & Auto. We also inspect and replace the belt tensioner if it is weak — a worn tensioner causes the new belt to slip and squeal. This is a quick preventive repair that can save you from a roadside breakdown.
