POTHOLE DAMAGE: WHAT TO CHECK AFTER HITTING ONE IN CLEVELAND

Cleveland potholes damage thousands of vehicles every spring. Knowing what to check after a bad hit can prevent expensive secondary damage.

Immediate Signs of Pothole Damage

Tire going flat or losing air slowly. New vibration in the steering wheel. Vehicle pulling to one side. Visible bulge or bubble in the tire sidewall. Steering wheel off-center. Clunking or rattling noise that was not there before. If you hit a large pothole at speed, pull over safely and inspect the tires visually before continuing to drive.

Tire Damage

Potholes cause sidewall bulges (internal belt separation), pinch flats (where the tire gets pinched between the pothole edge and the wheel rim), and tread separation. Sidewall bulges cannot be repaired — the tire must be replaced because the structural integrity is compromised. Even if the tire looks fine, a hard hit can cause internal damage that leads to a blowout later.

Wheel Damage

Alloy wheels bend and crack from pothole impacts. A bent wheel causes vibration that cannot be fixed with balancing. Minor bends can sometimes be straightened by a wheel repair specialist ($75-$150 per wheel). Cracked wheels must be replaced. Steel wheels are more flexible and bend rather than crack, but a severely bent steel wheel also needs replacement.

Alignment and Suspension

A hard pothole hit knocks the alignment out of specification. Even a small change in toe or camber causes accelerated tire wear — you might not feel the difference in the steering, but the tires wear unevenly. Suspension components (tie rods, ball joints, control arm bushings, struts) can also be damaged by severe impacts. After any significant pothole hit, we recommend an alignment check at minimum.

Can You File a Claim?

In Cleveland and Cuyahoga County, you can file a pothole damage claim with the city. Document the pothole with photos (including location), save repair receipts, and file within the specified timeframe. Ohio municipalities have limited liability but claims are sometimes paid, especially for known problem areas. We provide detailed repair invoices that include the diagnosis and the cause of damage.
