How the Parking Brake System Works

Most vehicles use a cable-operated parking brake that activates the rear brakes mechanically — separate from the hydraulic system you use with the brake pedal. When you pull the parking brake handle or press the parking brake pedal, a cable runs from the handle to the rear brakes. On vehicles with rear drum brakes, the cable pushes the shoes outward against the drum. On vehicles with rear disc brakes, the cable activates a small drum-in-hat mechanism built into the center of the rotor, or it mechanically pushes the caliper piston. Some newer vehicles use an electronic parking brake — a motor on the caliper does the work instead of a cable.

Why Parking Brakes Fail in Cleveland

Cable Stretch and Adjustment

Before assuming you need a new cable, the first thing to check is adjustment. Parking brake cables stretch over time, and the system has a built-in adjuster. On many vehicles, tightening the adjuster at the handle or pedal assembly takes up the slack and restores proper operation. On vehicles with rear drums, the drum brake self-adjuster also needs to be working correctly — if the drum brake shoes are too far from the drum, the parking brake cable cannot pull them into contact. Adjustment is a quick, inexpensive fix. If the cable is physically corroded, frayed, or seized, adjustment will not help and the cable needs replacement.

Drum vs Disc Rear Brakes and Parking Brake Issues

Vehicles with rear drum brakes generally have simpler and more effective parking brakes because the entire drum brake shoe surface is used to hold the vehicle. Adjustment is straightforward and parts are inexpensive. Vehicles with rear disc brakes and a drum-in-hat parking brake have a smaller braking surface dedicated to parking, and these systems are more sensitive to rust buildup inside the mini drum. On vehicles with caliper-integrated parking brakes, the caliper piston has a screw mechanism that can seize from corrosion. Electronic parking brakes add another failure point — the motor, wiring, and electronic control module. Each system has its own failure modes, and we work on all of them at Nick's.
