TRANSMISSION
SLIPPING?
Transmission problems are stressful because the repair can be expensive. We diagnose the exact issue first and give you honest options — sometimes it is a simple fix.
WHAT IS HAPPENING
Transmission slipping means the engine revs higher than normal without a corresponding increase in vehicle speed. It feels like the transmission is momentarily losing its grip. Other symptoms include delayed engagement when shifting from park to drive, harsh or jerky shifts, and the transmission refusing to shift into higher gears. These symptoms can indicate problems ranging from low fluid to internal mechanical failure.
WHEN TO STOP DRIVING
If the transmission is slipping badly, avoid heavy acceleration and highway driving. Continued driving with a slipping transmission generates excessive heat that causes further damage. If the transmission starts making grinding or whining noises, stop driving and have it towed.
POSSIBLE CAUSES
Low or Degraded Transmission Fluid
CommonTransmission fluid lubricates, cools, and creates the hydraulic pressure needed for shifting. Low fluid from a leak or degraded fluid from age can cause slipping. We check fluid level and condition — dark, burnt-smelling fluid indicates it needs service.
Transmission Fluid Leak
CommonLeaks from the pan gasket, cooler lines, axle seals, or torque converter seal reduce fluid level and cause slipping. We identify the leak source, repair it, and refill with the correct fluid specification.
Worn Clutch Packs (Automatic)
ModerateAutomatic transmissions use clutch packs to engage different gears. Over time, the friction material wears thin and the clutches slip. This is an internal repair that requires transmission removal.
Solenoid Failure
ModerateShift solenoids control fluid flow to engage different gears. A failed solenoid can cause slipping, harsh shifts, or failure to shift into certain gears. We scan for transmission codes and test solenoid operation electrically.
Torque Converter Problem
Less CommonThe torque converter transfers engine power to the transmission. Internal wear can cause shuddering, slipping, or overheating. Torque converter replacement requires transmission removal.
Software/TCM Issue
Less CommonModern transmissions are computer-controlled. A faulty transmission control module or outdated software can cause shifting problems. We scan for codes and can reprogram the TCM when applicable.
HOW WE DIAGNOSE THIS
We start by checking transmission fluid level and condition. Then we scan for stored transmission codes. We perform a road test to characterize the slipping — which gears, under what conditions, and how severe. We check line pressure with a gauge if needed. This tells us whether the problem is electrical (solenoids, sensors) or mechanical (clutch packs, bands) before recommending repair.
HOW WE FIX THIS AT NICK'S
Every repair at Nick's Tire & Auto starts with understanding the actual problem — not guessing. Here's what happens from the moment you pull into our shop on Euclid Ave to the moment you drive away with a fix that lasts.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is it safe to drive with a slipping transmission?
Mild slipping at low speeds is usually safe for short distances to reach a shop. However, continued driving accelerates wear and increases repair costs. Avoid highway driving and heavy loads until the problem is diagnosed.
How much does a transmission rebuild cost?
A transmission rebuild typically costs $1,500 to $3,500 depending on the vehicle and the extent of internal damage. We always diagnose the specific problem first — sometimes a fluid service, solenoid replacement, or software update can fix the issue without a full rebuild.
Should I just replace the transmission?
Not necessarily. We diagnose the exact cause first. Many transmission problems are caused by external issues like leaks, solenoids, or software that cost far less to fix than a rebuild. We give you honest options and let you decide.
