OIL LEAK
UNDER YOUR CAR?

An oil spot under your vehicle is more than a driveway stain — it is a warning. Oil leaks get worse over time, never better. Left unchecked, they lead to low oil levels, engine overheating, and eventually catastrophic engine damage.

Understanding the Problem

WHAT IS HAPPENING

Oil leaks are extremely common, especially on vehicles with higher mileage. Gaskets and seals harden and shrink over time, allowing oil to seep past. The severity ranges from a minor seep that leaves a few drops on your driveway to a significant leak that requires checking oil level every few days. The color of the fluid helps identify it — engine oil is typically brown or black, transmission fluid is red or pink, and power steering fluid is clear or light brown. The location of the puddle under the vehicle also helps narrow down the source.

WHEN TO STOP DRIVING

If your oil warning light comes on or the oil pressure gauge drops to zero, pull over immediately and shut off the engine. Running an engine with no oil pressure will destroy it within minutes. If you notice a large puddle of oil (larger than a dinner plate) forming quickly, do not drive the vehicle — have it towed.

Root Causes

POSSIBLE CAUSES

Valve Cover Gasket

Common

The valve cover gasket sits on top of the engine and seals the valve cover to the cylinder head. Over time, the rubber gasket hardens and cracks, allowing oil to seep down the sides of the engine. This is one of the most common and least expensive oil leak repairs.

Typical cost:$150 to $350 depending on engine configuration

Oil Pan Gasket

Common

The oil pan sits at the bottom of the engine and holds all the engine oil. The gasket between the pan and the engine block can deteriorate, causing oil to drip directly onto the ground. Cleveland's road salt and debris can also damage the oil pan itself.

Typical cost:$250 to $500 depending on accessibility

Oil Filter or Drain Plug

Moderate

A loose or improperly installed oil filter or drain plug can cause a steady oil leak. This is especially common right after an oil change. The fix is usually simple — tightening or replacing the filter or plug and its washer.

Typical cost:$20 to $50 for filter or plug replacement

Rear Main Seal

Moderate

The rear main seal sits between the engine and transmission and prevents oil from leaking out the back of the crankshaft. When this seal fails, oil drips from the bell housing area. This is a labor-intensive repair because the transmission must be removed to access the seal.

Typical cost:$500 to $1,200 due to labor involved

Timing Cover Gasket

Less Common

The timing cover gasket seals the front of the engine where the timing chain or belt is housed. A leak here typically shows oil dripping from the front-center of the engine. On some vehicles, this can be a significant repair.

Typical cost:$300 to $800 depending on the engine

Crankshaft Front Seal

Less Common

The front crankshaft seal sits behind the main pulley at the front of the engine. When it leaks, oil sprays onto the serpentine belt and front of the engine. You may notice a burning oil smell as oil contacts hot engine components.

Typical cost:$200 to $500 depending on accessibility
Our Approach

HOW WE DIAGNOSE THIS

We start by cleaning the engine and leak area, then use UV dye and a blacklight to trace the exact source of the leak. Oil can travel along the engine surface before dripping, making the source difficult to identify visually. The UV dye glows under blacklight, creating a clear trail back to the origin point. We also check your oil level and condition while diagnosing the leak.

Common Questions

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is it safe to drive with an oil leak?

Small seeps that leave a few drops are generally safe to drive on as long as you monitor your oil level regularly and top it off as needed. However, any leak that requires adding oil more than once between oil changes should be repaired. A significant leak that drops oil pressure is dangerous and requires immediate attention.

How do I know if the leak is oil or something else?

Engine oil is typically dark brown or black and feels slippery. Transmission fluid is usually red or pink. Coolant is green, orange, or pink and feels slightly sticky. Power steering fluid is clear to light brown. Brake fluid is clear and slightly oily. The location of the puddle also helps — engine oil leaks toward the front-center, transmission fluid toward the middle.

Why does my car leak oil only when parked?

When your engine is running, oil is circulating under pressure. When you park, oil settles to the lowest point and pools around worn gaskets and seals, allowing it to seep through. Some leaks are only visible after the vehicle sits for several hours because it takes time for enough oil to accumulate and drip.

Can an oil leak cause a fire?

Yes. If oil leaks onto hot exhaust components, it can smoke and potentially ignite. This is especially concerning with valve cover gasket leaks on some engines where the exhaust manifold is directly below. If you smell burning oil, have the leak inspected promptly.
