GRINDING NOISE
WHEN BRAKING?
A grinding noise when you apply the brakes is a clear sign that something in your brake system needs immediate attention. The longer you wait, the more expensive the repair becomes.
WHAT IS HAPPENING
Grinding noises during braking are one of the most common and urgent symptoms we diagnose. The sound typically indicates metal-on-metal contact somewhere in the brake system. This could mean your brake pads have worn through their friction material, a rotor has developed deep scoring, or a foreign object is caught in the brake assembly. Regardless of the cause, grinding brakes reduce your stopping power and can cause rapid damage to expensive components if not addressed quickly.
WHEN TO STOP DRIVING
If the grinding is loud and constant, or if you feel the brake pedal traveling further than normal, your stopping ability is compromised. Drive directly to the nearest repair shop at low speed, avoiding the highway. If the grinding is severe, have the vehicle towed.
POSSIBLE CAUSES
Worn Brake Pads
CommonThe most frequent cause of grinding during braking. Once the friction material wears away, the metal backing plate contacts the rotor directly. This damages the rotor surface rapidly and increases stopping distance.
Scored or Damaged Rotors
CommonRotors that are deeply scored, warped, or worn below minimum thickness create grinding and vibration during braking. Rotors in this condition must be replaced rather than resurfaced.
Stuck or Seized Caliper
ModerateA caliper that does not release properly keeps the pad pressed against the rotor constantly, causing rapid wear and a grinding noise that may occur even when you are not braking. You may also notice the vehicle pulling to one side.
Debris Caught in Brakes
ModerateRocks, gravel, or brake pad fragments can get lodged between the pad and rotor, causing a grinding or scraping sound. This usually requires removing the wheel to inspect and clean the brake assembly.
Worn Brake Hardware
Less CommonBrake pad clips, shims, and anti-rattle hardware can wear out or shift position, allowing the pad to contact the rotor unevenly. This creates grinding or scraping noises that worsen over time.
Rust on Rotors After Sitting
Less CommonIf your vehicle sat for several days, especially in wet Cleveland weather, a thin layer of rust forms on the rotors. This causes a brief grinding or scraping noise that clears after a few brake applications. This is normal and not a concern.
HOW WE DIAGNOSE THIS
We remove the wheels and perform a thorough visual inspection of all brake components on every wheel. We measure pad thickness, check rotor condition and thickness with a micrometer, inspect calipers for proper movement and leaks, and examine all hardware. We show you the worn or damaged components so you can see exactly what needs attention.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is it safe to drive with grinding brakes?
Grinding brakes mean reduced stopping power. You should drive directly to a repair shop and avoid highway speeds. Every mile with grinding brakes increases rotor damage and repair costs.
How much does it cost to fix grinding brakes?
If caught early, brake pad replacement runs $150 to $300 per axle. If the rotors are damaged from grinding, expect $300 to $500 per axle for pads and rotors. We provide an exact quote after inspection.
Why do my brakes grind only in the morning?
Morning grinding that goes away after a few stops is usually surface rust on the rotors from overnight moisture. This is normal in Cleveland's climate and not a concern. If the grinding persists, have the brakes inspected.
