CHECK ENGINE
LIGHT ON?
A steady check engine light means your vehicle's computer has detected a problem. It could be something simple like a loose gas cap or something that needs professional attention. We diagnose the exact cause.
WHAT IS HAPPENING
The check engine light is the most common dashboard warning light and covers hundreds of possible issues. A steady (not flashing) check engine light means the vehicle's on-board computer has detected an emissions or engine management problem. Unlike a flashing check engine light, which indicates an active misfire requiring immediate attention, a steady light means you can continue driving but should have it diagnosed soon. The longer you ignore it, the more likely the original problem will cause secondary issues that increase repair costs.
WHEN TO STOP DRIVING
A steady check engine light does not require you to stop driving, but you should have it diagnosed within a few days. If the light starts flashing, that indicates an active misfire — reduce speed and get to a shop immediately to prevent catalytic converter damage. If you notice performance problems like stalling, rough running, or loss of power alongside the check engine light, have it diagnosed sooner rather than later.
POSSIBLE CAUSES
Oxygen (O2) Sensor Failure
CommonO2 sensors monitor exhaust gases to help the engine computer adjust the air-fuel mixture. When a sensor fails, the engine runs less efficiently, reducing fuel economy by 10-40%. Most vehicles have 2-4 O2 sensors. This is the single most common check engine light cause.
Loose or Damaged Gas Cap
CommonA loose, cracked, or missing gas cap allows fuel vapors to escape, triggering the evaporative emission system code. Try tightening the gas cap and driving for a day — the light may clear on its own. If the cap is cracked, replace it.
Catalytic Converter Failure
ModerateThe catalytic converter reduces harmful emissions. When it fails or becomes clogged, the check engine light comes on and the vehicle may fail Ohio E-Check. Catalytic converter replacement is one of the more expensive repairs, but we diagnose whether it is truly failed or if another issue caused the code.
Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor
ModerateThe MAF sensor measures air entering the engine. When it fails or gets dirty, the engine runs poorly and fuel economy drops. Sometimes cleaning the sensor resolves the issue without replacement.
Spark Plugs or Ignition Coils
ModerateWorn spark plugs or failing ignition coils cause misfires that trigger the check engine light. If left unchecked, misfires can damage the catalytic converter. Replacing spark plugs and coils is routine maintenance.
EVAP System Leak
Less CommonThe evaporative emission system captures fuel vapors. A leak in the system — cracked hose, stuck purge valve, or damaged charcoal canister — triggers the check engine light and will cause an E-Check failure.
HOW WE DIAGNOSE THIS
We connect our professional OBD-II scanner to read all stored diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and freeze frame data. We then perform targeted testing based on the codes — checking sensor readings, inspecting components, and running system tests. We do not just read codes and guess; we verify the actual failure before recommending any repairs. This approach prevents unnecessary part replacements.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Can I pass Ohio E-Check with a check engine light on?
No. Any illuminated check engine light is an automatic E-Check failure in Ohio. The light must be off and the vehicle's monitors must be in a ready state to pass. We diagnose and repair the cause, then verify the monitors are ready before you retest.
Why did my check engine light come on after an oil change?
If the check engine light came on shortly after an oil change, the most common cause is a loose oil filler cap or a sensor connector that was accidentally bumped. Less commonly, the wrong oil weight was used. Have the codes read to determine the exact cause.
Is it expensive to fix a check engine light?
It depends entirely on the cause. A loose gas cap costs nothing to tighten. An O2 sensor runs $150 to $400. A catalytic converter can be $500 to $1,500. We always diagnose the exact cause and give you a firm quote before any work begins.
