CAR WON'T
START?
A car that will not start can be caused by electrical, fuel, or mechanical problems. The symptoms you notice — clicking, cranking, or complete silence — tell us where to look first.
WHAT IS HAPPENING
A no-start condition is one of the most frustrating problems a driver can face. The good news is that the symptoms provide strong clues about the cause. If you hear a rapid clicking sound, the battery is likely too weak to engage the starter. If the engine cranks but will not fire, the problem is usually fuel delivery or ignition. Complete silence when you turn the key points to a dead battery, corroded connections, or a failed starter solenoid.
WHEN TO STOP DRIVING
If your car will not start, do not keep cranking the engine for extended periods — this can drain the battery further and overheat the starter. Try a few times, then stop. If you smell fuel, stop immediately as you may be flooding the engine. If you see smoke from under the hood, do not attempt to start the vehicle.
POSSIBLE CAUSES
Dead or Weak Battery
CommonThe battery is the most common cause of a no-start. Cleveland's cold winters are especially hard on batteries. We test battery voltage, cold cranking amps, and charging system output to determine if the battery needs replacement or if the alternator is not charging properly.
Corroded Battery Terminals
CommonCorrosion on battery terminals prevents proper electrical contact. This can cause intermittent starting problems that get worse over time. We clean terminals and apply protective coating, or replace cables if corrosion has damaged the wire.
Failed Starter Motor
ModerateThe starter motor physically cranks the engine. When it fails, you may hear a single click or grinding noise when turning the key. Starters can fail gradually or suddenly. We test starter draw and operation before recommending replacement.
Fuel Pump Failure
ModerateIf the engine cranks normally but will not start, the fuel pump may have failed. You should hear a brief hum from the fuel tank when you turn the key to the ON position. No hum often means no fuel delivery. We test fuel pressure at the rail to confirm.
Ignition Switch or Key Problem
Less CommonA worn ignition switch or a key with a weak transponder chip can prevent starting. The security light on the dashboard may flash. We diagnose ignition circuit problems and can often reprogram keys.
Failed Alternator
Less CommonA failed alternator does not directly prevent starting, but it will drain the battery over time. If your battery keeps dying after being charged or replaced, the alternator is likely not charging. We test alternator output and diode condition.
HOW WE DIAGNOSE THIS
We start by testing battery voltage and condition. If the battery is good, we test the starter circuit including the solenoid, relay, and wiring. If the engine cranks but will not start, we check fuel pressure, spark, and injector pulse. We also scan for stored codes that may indicate a security system lockout or sensor failure.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Why does my car click but not start?
Rapid clicking usually means the battery has enough power to engage the starter solenoid but not enough to turn the engine. A single loud click often means the starter motor itself has failed. Either way, we can diagnose it quickly.
How long do car batteries last in Cleveland?
In Cleveland's climate, most car batteries last 3 to 5 years. Cold temperatures reduce battery capacity, and hot summers accelerate internal degradation. We recommend testing your battery every fall before winter.
Can you jump start my car and test the battery?
Yes. If you can get your vehicle to our shop, we will test the battery, alternator, and starter for free to determine why it is not starting reliably.
