CAR OVERHEATING?
PULL OVER NOW.

An overheating engine can cause catastrophic damage in minutes. If your temperature gauge is in the red or you see steam from under the hood, pull over safely, turn off the engine, and call for help.

Understanding the Problem

WHAT IS HAPPENING

Engine overheating is one of the most damaging things that can happen to a vehicle. Modern engines are designed to operate within a narrow temperature range. When the cooling system fails to maintain that range, temperatures rise rapidly and can cause warped cylinder heads, blown head gaskets, and even cracked engine blocks. The key is to stop driving immediately when you see the temperature gauge climbing into the danger zone.

WHEN TO STOP DRIVING

If the temperature gauge reaches the red zone, steam is coming from under the hood, or you smell sweet coolant, pull over immediately and turn off the engine. Do not open the radiator cap when the engine is hot — pressurized coolant can cause severe burns. Let the engine cool completely before checking anything. Call for a tow if you cannot identify and fix the problem roadside.

Root Causes

POSSIBLE CAUSES

Coolant Leak

Common

The most common cause of overheating is simply losing coolant through a leak. Radiator hoses, the water pump, radiator itself, heater core, and head gasket are all potential leak points. We pressure test the system to find the exact leak location.

Typical cost:$100 to $500 depending on the leak location

Failed Thermostat

Common

The thermostat regulates coolant flow between the engine and radiator. When it sticks closed, coolant cannot circulate to the radiator and the engine overheats rapidly. Thermostat replacement is straightforward and affordable.

Typical cost:$150 to $300 including coolant

Water Pump Failure

Moderate

The water pump circulates coolant through the engine. When the impeller breaks, the bearing seizes, or the seal leaks, coolant flow stops or is reduced. We test water pump operation and replace it when failed.

Typical cost:$300 to $800 depending on the vehicle and pump location

Radiator Fan Failure

Moderate

The radiator fan pulls air through the radiator when the vehicle is stopped or moving slowly. If the fan motor fails or the fan relay/sensor is faulty, the radiator cannot cool the coolant in traffic. The engine may be fine at highway speed but overheat at idle.

Typical cost:$200 to $500 for fan motor or relay replacement

Blown Head Gasket

Less Common

A blown head gasket allows combustion gases to enter the cooling system, which pushes coolant out and creates air pockets. Signs include white exhaust smoke, coolant in the oil, and overheating with a full coolant level. This is a major repair.

Typical cost:$1,000 to $2,500 depending on the engine

Clogged Radiator

Less Common

Over time, the inside of the radiator can become clogged with sediment, rust, and old coolant deposits. This reduces coolant flow and heat transfer. A radiator flush may help, but a severely clogged radiator needs replacement.

Typical cost:$300 to $700 for radiator replacement
Our Approach

HOW WE DIAGNOSE THIS

We start with a visual inspection for obvious leaks, then pressure test the cooling system to find hidden leaks. We check the thermostat operation, test the water pump for proper flow, verify radiator fan operation, and check for combustion gases in the coolant (which indicates a head gasket leak). We also check coolant condition and concentration.

Common Questions

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I drive with the temperature gauge in the red?

No. Driving with an overheating engine for even a few minutes can cause thousands of dollars in damage. Pull over, turn off the engine, and let it cool. If it overheats again after adding coolant, have it towed.

Why does my car overheat in traffic but not on the highway?

This usually indicates a radiator fan problem. At highway speed, air flows through the radiator naturally. In traffic, the fan must pull air through. If the fan motor, relay, or temperature sensor has failed, the fan does not turn on and the engine overheats.

How much does it cost to fix an overheating car?

It depends entirely on the cause. A thermostat replacement might be $200. A water pump could be $500. A head gasket repair can be $1,500 or more. We diagnose the specific cause and provide an exact quote before any work begins.
