TPMS SENSOR REPLACEMENT COST (2026 GUIDE)

That orange tire pressure light on your dash means your TPMS system detected a problem. Here is what it costs to fix and when you actually need new sensors.

What Is TPMS and Why Does It Matter?

TPMS stands for Tire Pressure Monitoring System. Since 2007, every new car sold in the US has sensors inside each wheel that monitor air pressure in real time. When pressure drops below the threshold — usually about 25% below the recommended PSI — the warning light comes on. Driving on underinflated tires is dangerous (especially on I-90 at highway speed) and kills fuel economy. The system exists to keep you safe.

Why TPMS Sensors Fail

Each TPMS sensor has a small battery that lasts 5 to 10 years. When the battery dies, the sensor stops transmitting and the TPMS light illuminates. You cannot replace just the battery — the entire sensor needs replacing. Road salt in Cleveland accelerates corrosion on the sensor valve stems, which can cause air leaks or sensor failure. Impact damage from potholes can also break sensors. If your car is 8 to 12 years old and a sensor fails, expect the others to follow within a year since they all have similar battery life.

TPMS Sensor Replacement Cost Breakdown

At Nick's Tire & Auto, TPMS sensor replacement costs $50 to $150 per sensor depending on the vehicle. OEM sensors from the dealership run $80 to $200 each plus $30 to $50 labor per wheel. Aftermarket programmable sensors cost $30 to $60 each and work identically — these are what we use and recommend for most vehicles. We program each sensor to your vehicle's specific protocol and verify that all four sensors communicate with the dash display. If you are getting new tires anyway, replacing TPMS sensors at the same time saves labor because the tires are already off the wheels.

TPMS Light On — Do You Need New Sensors?

Not always. The most common reason the TPMS light turns on is simply low tire pressure. Check all four tires with a gauge and add air to the recommended PSI (listed on the sticker inside the driver's door jamb). If the light turns off after driving a few minutes, you just had low pressure — not a sensor problem. If the light stays on after correcting pressures, or if it flashes for 60 seconds then stays solid, a sensor has likely failed. Come to Nick's and we will scan the TPMS system to identify which sensor is the problem.

Should You Replace All Four at Once?

If one sensor fails due to age and battery depletion, the other three are on borrowed time. Replacing all four at once costs more upfront but saves you from returning to the shop three more times over the next year. If the failure is from damage — like hitting a pothole on Carnegie Avenue — you probably only need the one. We will tell you honestly which scenario applies.
