TPMS LIGHT ON? WHAT YOUR TIRE PRESSURE WARNING MEANS

The TPMS light is one of the most common dashboard warnings Cleveland drivers see, especially when temperatures drop. Here is when to worry and when not to.

How TPMS Works

Your vehicle has a pressure sensor inside each tire (mounted on the valve stem or wheel rim). These sensors transmit real-time pressure readings to the vehicle's computer. When any tire drops below 25% of the recommended pressure, the TPMS warning light illuminates. Some vehicles show individual tire pressures on the dashboard, while others just show a warning light.

Cold Weather and TPMS

Tire pressure drops about 1 PSI for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit of temperature change. In Cleveland, where overnight temperatures can drop 30+ degrees from daytime highs, it is common for the TPMS light to come on during cold mornings and go off as the tires warm up from driving. If the light only appears on very cold mornings, your tires are likely on the edge — adding 2-3 PSI brings them above the threshold.

When TPMS Indicates a Real Problem

The light stays on all the time, not just on cold mornings. The light comes on and stays on during warm weather. One tire is visibly lower than the others. You need to add air more than once a month. The TPMS light flashes and then stays solid (this means the sensor itself has failed). A nail, screw, or other puncture causes a slow leak that the TPMS catches early.

TPMS Service at Nick's

We check tire pressures and TPMS function during every service visit. If a TPMS sensor has failed (battery dies after 7-10 years), replacement costs $50-$100 per sensor installed. When installing new tires, we replace the TPMS valve stem hardware (seal, nut, core) to prevent air leaks. We also reprogram TPMS sensors when tires are rotated to the correct wheel position if your vehicle requires it.
