TIRE BLOWOUT: WHAT TO DO AND HOW TO PREVENT

A blowout on I-90 at 65 mph is one of the scariest things that can happen behind the wheel. What you do in the first three seconds determines the outcome.

What to Do During a Blowout — The First 3 Seconds

Your instincts will scream at you to slam the brakes and jerk the wheel. Fight both of those instincts — they will make things worse. Here is what to do: Keep your hands firm on the steering wheel at 10 and 2. Do NOT slam the brakes. Instead, gently press the gas pedal to maintain speed and regain stability — this sounds wrong but it keeps the vehicle tracking straight while you get control. Let the car slow down gradually on its own. Once you have control and your speed is dropping, gently steer toward the right shoulder. Brake lightly only after you are below 30 mph and on the shoulder. Turn on your hazard lights immediately. A front tire blowout will pull the car toward the blown side. A rear blowout will make the back end sway. In both cases, the key is gradual deceleration and smooth steering inputs.

What Causes Tire Blowouts

The number one cause is under-inflation. A tire running low on air flexes more than it should. That excessive flexing generates heat in the sidewall. On a hot summer day cruising I-271 at highway speed, that heat builds until the rubber fails catastrophically. Under-inflation is responsible for the majority of blowouts. Other causes include old tires with degraded rubber — dry rot weakens the structure until it cannot handle the stress. Overloading your vehicle — putting more weight than the tires are rated for — creates the same heat buildup as under-inflation. Road hazards — hitting a deep pothole, a piece of debris, or a curb at speed can damage the tire structure internally, creating a weak point that fails later.

Cleveland-Specific Blowout Risks

Cleveland has two blowout seasons. Summer heat is the obvious one — pavement temperatures on I-90 can exceed 130 degrees on a 90-degree day. Combined with under-inflated tires, that is blowout territory. But Cleveland also has a spring blowout season that most people do not think about. Winter potholes damage tire sidewalls internally — the damage is not always visible from the outside. As temperatures warm up and drivers start making longer highway trips, those weakened tires fail under sustained highway heat. We see a spike in blowout-related tow-ins every May and June. If you hit a major pothole during winter, get the tire inspected even if it looks fine.

How to Prevent Blowouts

Prevention is straightforward. Check tire pressure monthly — use the number on the driver door sticker, not the sidewall. Inspect tires regularly for bulges, cracks, cuts, or objects embedded in the tread. Replace tires at 4/32 tread depth or 6 years of age, whichever comes first. Do not overload your vehicle — check the load rating on the tire and the weight rating on the driver door sticker. Have your tires rotated every 5,000 to 7,500 miles to ensure even wear. And after hitting a significant pothole, get a tire inspection.

Free Tire Safety Inspections at Nick's

Drive into Nick's Tire and Auto any day and we will inspect your tires for free — pressure, tread depth, sidewall condition, age, and signs of internal damage.
