Tires — The Number One Road Trip Failure Point
More road trips are ruined by tire problems than any other mechanical failure. Check your tire tread depth — stick a quarter upside down into the tread. If you can see the top of Washington's head, you have less than 4/32 of tread and you need new tires before a long trip. Check tire pressure when the tires are cold — the correct PSI is on the sticker inside your driver's door, not on the tire sidewall. Underinflated tires overheat on long highway drives, especially on hot Ohio summer pavement. That is how blowouts happen. Also check the spare tire — if you have not looked at it since you bought the car, it might be flat.
Fluids — Oil, Coolant, Brake Fluid, Transmission
If you are within 1,000 miles of your next oil change, get it done before the trip. Running old oil on a 4-hour drive to Cedar Point in 90-degree heat is asking for trouble. Check your coolant level and condition — it should be full and either green, orange, or pink depending on your vehicle. Brown or rusty coolant needs to be flushed. Top off brake fluid, power steering fluid, and windshield washer fluid. If your transmission fluid is dark or smells burnt, get it changed — a transmission failure 3 hours from home is an expensive and miserable experience.

Brakes — Stop Safely at Highway Speed
Long highway drives with a loaded car put extra demand on your brakes, especially if your trip includes hilly terrain like Hocking Hills or the Route 2 curves along Lake Erie. If your brakes squeal, grind, or feel soft, get them inspected before you leave. Brake pad replacement at Nick's starts at $149.99 per axle with quality pads — a lot cheaper than getting brake work done at a shop in Sandusky where you have no relationship and no leverage on price.
AC — Do Not Suffer Through an Ohio Summer Drive
Test your AC before the trip. If it blows warm air, weak air, or takes a long time to cool down, the system likely needs a recharge or has a leak. An AC recharge takes about 30 minutes and costs $149 to $249 depending on the refrigerant type. Your AC also dehumidifies the cabin, which prevents your windshield from fogging up in sudden summer rainstorms — a safety issue, not just a comfort issue.
Belts, Hoses, and Battery
Pop the hood and look at the serpentine belt — if it is cracked, glazed, or fraying, replace it. A belt failure on I-80 between Cleveland and Sandusky kills your power steering, alternator, and water pump all at once. Check coolant hoses for soft spots, bulges, or leaks. And test your battery — Cleveland winters are brutal on batteries, and a battery that barely survived winter may not have enough capacity left for summer. We test batteries for free at Nick's. No appointment needed.
