AC Recharge — The Simple Fix
If the AC gradually lost cooling power over the past year, the system may just be low on refrigerant. A basic AC recharge involves recovering existing refrigerant, checking for leaks, and recharging the system to the proper level. Cost at Nick's: $150 to $250 depending on the refrigerant type. Older vehicles use R-134a, while many newer vehicles use R-1234yf which costs more. A recharge is the cheapest AC fix, but it only works if the system has a very slow leak or was just slightly low. If the system is empty, there is a bigger leak that needs repair first.
Leak Repair — Hoses, O-Rings, and Condenser
Refrigerant leaks are the most common AC problem. Rubber hoses and O-ring seals degrade over time, especially in Cleveland's temperature extremes. A hose or O-ring repair runs $200 to $450. The condenser — the radiator-like component at the front of the car — is vulnerable to road debris damage. Condenser replacement costs $350 to $700 depending on the vehicle. We use UV dye and electronic leak detection to find the exact leak point so we are not guessing.

Compressor Replacement — The Big One
The compressor is the heart of the AC system. When it fails, the AC stops working completely. Symptoms include loud clicking or grinding when the AC engages, or the AC clutch not engaging at all. Compressor replacement costs $600 to $1,200 including parts, labor, and system recharge. When a compressor fails, it often sends metal debris through the system, which means the condenser and expansion valve may need replacement too. That can push total cost to $1,200 to $1,800. This is why catching a slow leak early saves money — running a system low on refrigerant is what kills compressors.
Evaporator Replacement — The Labor-Intensive Repair
The evaporator is buried inside the dashboard, which makes it one of the most labor-intensive AC repairs. The part itself is $150 to $300, but labor to access it can run $500 to $1,000 because the dashboard often needs to come apart. Total evaporator replacement runs $700 to $1,400. Evaporator leaks are less common than other AC failures but they happen, especially on vehicles over 10 years old. If your AC smells musty or moldy, the evaporator may also need cleaning even if it is not leaking.
