Lake Effect Snow — Cleveland's Unique Hazard
If you are new to Cleveland or the East Side, lake effect snow is no joke. Lake Erie can dump 6 to 12 inches on the East Side while the West Side gets nothing. It hits fast, reduces visibility to near zero, and covers roads in minutes. The snow bands are narrow but intense. You can drive from clear roads into a whiteout in less than a mile. When lake effect is active, slow down dramatically, increase following distance to at least 6 seconds, and use low beams — high beams reflect off the snow and make visibility worse.
I-90 Lakefront Driving
I-90 along the lakefront between downtown and Euclid is one of the most dangerous stretches of highway in Ohio during winter. The lake creates wind gusts, ice formation, and sudden snow squalls. Black ice forms on the elevated sections and bridges first. If traffic suddenly slows ahead of you on I-90 in winter, assume there is ice or an accident — do not try to maintain speed. We see the aftermath of I-90 winter accidents regularly at the shop. Good tires and proper following distance prevent most of them.

Tires Make the Biggest Difference
No driving technique compensates for bad tires. Winter tires with proper tread depth are the single biggest safety improvement you can make. They reduce stopping distance on ice by 30 to 40 percent compared to worn all-season tires. If winter tires are not in your budget, at minimum make sure your all-seasons have at least 5/32 of tread depth. Anything less and you are sliding, not stopping. We stock winter tires and quality used tires for every budget.
Emergency Gear Every Cleveland Driver Needs
Keep this in your car from November through March: portable phone charger, blanket or sleeping bag, flashlight, ice scraper and brush, small shovel, jumper cables or portable jump pack, bag of sand or kitty litter, water bottle, and snacks. If you commute on highways, add warm gloves, a hat, and an extra jacket. Getting stranded on I-480 during a lake effect event in a dress shirt with a dead phone is a real scenario. Be ready.
