BATTERY KEEPS
DYING?
If your battery keeps going dead, something is either draining it or not charging it. We test the entire electrical system to find the exact cause.
WHAT IS HAPPENING
A battery that repeatedly dies is one of the most frustrating vehicle problems because it leaves you stranded. The cause is always one of three things: the battery itself is failing, the charging system is not keeping it charged, or something is draining it when the vehicle is off (parasitic drain). Each requires different testing to diagnose. Simply replacing the battery without finding the root cause often leads to the same problem with the new battery.
WHEN TO STOP DRIVING
If your battery keeps dying, you can usually jump start and drive to a shop safely. However, if the battery warning light is on while driving, the alternator may have failed and the vehicle is running on battery power alone. Drive directly to a shop — you have limited time before the battery dies completely.
POSSIBLE CAUSES
Failing Battery
CommonCar batteries have a finite lifespan, typically 3-5 years in Cleveland's climate. A battery can test fine when warm but fail in cold weather because its capacity has degraded. We load test batteries to measure actual capacity under stress, not just resting voltage.
Failed Alternator
CommonThe alternator charges the battery while the engine is running. If the alternator fails, the battery slowly drains and eventually dies. Signs include dimming headlights, a battery warning light, and electrical accessories losing power. We test alternator output and diode condition.
Parasitic Drain
ModerateA parasitic drain is something drawing power from the battery when the vehicle is off. Common culprits include aftermarket accessories, a stuck relay, a malfunctioning module that does not go to sleep, or a trunk or glove box light staying on. We perform a current draw test to measure the drain, then systematically pull fuses to identify the circuit.
Corroded or Loose Connections
ModerateCorroded battery terminals or loose cable connections prevent proper charging and can cause intermittent starting problems. We clean all connections, check cable condition, and ensure tight, corrosion-free contact.
Short Trips Only
Less CommonIf you only drive short distances, the alternator may not have enough time to fully recharge the battery after starting. This gradually depletes the battery over days or weeks. A battery maintainer or occasional longer drives can help.
Faulty Voltage Regulator
Less CommonThe voltage regulator controls how much the alternator charges. If it fails, the alternator may overcharge (damaging the battery) or undercharge (not keeping it full). On most modern vehicles, the regulator is built into the alternator.
HOW WE DIAGNOSE THIS
We perform a complete electrical system test: battery load test, alternator output test, voltage drop test on cables and connections, and parasitic draw test with the vehicle off. This covers all possible causes in one visit. We also check the battery age and history to determine if it is simply at end of life.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Why does my new battery keep dying?
If a new battery keeps dying, the problem is not the battery. Either the alternator is not charging it, or something is draining it when the vehicle is off. We test the charging system and measure parasitic draw to find the real cause.
What is a parasitic drain?
A parasitic drain is an electrical component drawing power from the battery when the vehicle is off. Normal drain is about 50 milliamps for computer memory. Anything over 75-100 milliamps will eventually kill the battery. We measure the draw and trace it to the specific circuit.
How do I know if it is the battery or alternator?
If the vehicle starts fine after a jump but dies again within a day or two, the alternator is likely not charging. If the battery is over 4 years old and struggles in cold weather, the battery itself is probably failing. We test both to give you a definitive answer.
